چکیده

Bambaranut (BN) (Vigna subterranea (L.)  Verdc.) Is a nutrient rich, drought tolerant food legume that can contribute to security and community resilience. In Uganda however, production utilization remain in relative obscurity. A study was conducted Northern Eastern determine practices identify challenges opportunities for BN improvement. Primary data on demographics, scale of production, were collected from 371 farm households. Results show more women (62%) than men (38%) are engaged home consumption (100%), seed maintenance (50%) sale seeds/grains (44%). Production is low (averaging 0.2 tob 0.35 acre) with few farmers involved. The crop predominantly utilised as consumed fresh boiled snack (99%) local dishes (79%). Major confront include scarcity seeds (73%), limited market (65%) difficulty harvesting (51%). Farmers overcome these by saving own seeds, obtaining neighbours producing relatively small scale. Improving practices, fostering community-research linkages support accessing harnessing the eager participation youth will stimulate increased better utilisation Uganda. Key words: Bambaranut, utilisation, practice, challenges.

In Vitro Seeds Germination and Seedling Growth of Bambara Groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc. (Fabaceae))

Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is an indigenous grain legume. It occupies a prominent place in the strategies to ensure food security in sub-Saharan Africa. Development of an efficient in vitro regeneration system, a prerequisite for genetic transformation application, requires the establishment of optimal conditions for seeds germination and plantlets development. Three type...

Variation in Pod Yield Characters and Heritability Estimates in Some Cultivars of Bambara Groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc

Variation in pod and seed yield among twelve cultivars of Bambara groundnut was investigated in 2004 and 2005 cropping seasons. The mean performance revealed that BG7004AS despite its recorded low number of pods per plant, had the highest 100 seed weight, pod width, pod length, seed width and seed length, followed by BG7002AS, BG7009BS and BG70010AS, which had the best yield and yield component...

African origin of Bradyrhizobium populations nodulating Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc) in Ghanaian and South African soils

Flavonoids secreted by legumes play a major role as signal molecules for attracting compatible rhizobia. The aim of this study was to assess and understand the diversity of microsymbionts nodulating Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc.) landraces of different seedcoat colours using restriction fragment length polymorphism and phylogenetic analysis. Seedcoat pigmentation of landraces h...

Bambara groundnut is an indigenous African legume grown mainly in sub-Saharan Africa; it is an important source of protein to the rural majority. There are no established varieties and subsistence farmers grow locally adapted landraces which are generally low yielding. Bambara groundnut is a predominantly self-pollinating crop and is expected to exist as nonidentical inbred lines, although the ...

Trypsin Inhibitor Activity and Condensed Tannin Content in Bambara Groundnut (Vigna Subterranea (L.) Verdc) Grown in Southern Africa

Legumes are an important source of protein in many developing countries. However this protein is not readily available because of antinutrients. Farmers are being encouraged to grow bambara groundnut to meet food sufficiency, hence information on the content of antinutrients is required. The objective of the study was to compare antinutrients trypsin inhibitor activity and condensed tannin cont...
